Files of child pornography were discovered in the home of an after-school activity animator in Gironde, who is suspected of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old child. The 52-year-old animator, employed on a permanent contract and holding a Bafa qualification—a certification required for working with children in France—has been placed under judicial supervision while awaiting his trial. The case began on June 10, when the girl went to the police station in Bordeaux with her family to report incidents of sexual touching. As a result, two animators from the Cenon leisure centers were initially suspected and suspended. During searches, computer equipment was seized, but no evidence was found at the home of one of the animators, leading to the closure of his file without further action. However, investigators discovered several files containing child pornography on the computer of the 52-year-old animator, which were downloaded as far back as 2012. He was arrested on August 26 and placed under judicial supervision the same day. While awaiting his trial, he is prohibited from going to Cenon, contacting the alleged victim and her family, and working in any profession that involves contact with children. The local town hall has remained silent on the matter due to the ongoing investigation's secrecy but has announced a meeting with parents scheduled for September 29. This meeting aims to address concerns and provide updates. In response to the case, the town hall has also announced plans to increase oversight of animators. This includes implementing stricter controls through the Automated National Judicial File of Sexually or Violently Offending Individuals—a national database that tracks individuals with a history of such offenses. This system allows authorities to check the backgrounds of those working with children more effectively, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future. The case has sparked discussions about the safety of children in after-school programs and the need for more rigorous vetting processes for staff.
