An after-school program animator was suspended in early September from a leisure center in Tarnos, Landes, due to suspicions he sent pornographic material to a minor. According to ICI Pays Basque, this is not the first time the individual has faced such allegations. In 2023, the city of Bayonne, located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, ended his contract after discovering that he was suspected of sending pornographic images to a minor outside of his professional duties. The city described the behavior as "inappropriate" and decided to terminate his employment. The city of Bayonne confirmed it "ended all collaboration with him" after learning about the allegations. They noted that he had been under contract only briefly. Meanwhile, the Youth and Sports services, which are part of the French government, alerted the prosecutor in Bayonne as required by Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. However, this legal procedure did not prevent him from being hired later by the leisure center in Tarnos. In response to growing concerns about the safety of children in educational and recreational settings, a new bill aimed at protecting children is currently under consideration. The proposed legislation includes the creation of a "list of banned individuals from schools," which would exclude teachers, after-school program animators, and sports animators who are under investigation for inappropriate behavior with minors. The bill was passed unanimously by the National Assembly in late June. Although the measure has received strong support, it still needs to be approved by the Senate, which is expected to consider it in October. If enacted, the law would help ensure that individuals with a history of misconduct are not allowed to work in positions where they could come into contact with children. This initiative reflects a broader effort to enhance child protection within educational and youth-related institutions across France.
