The production of Volkswagen ID.Cross has started in Spain, and the model has now met the necessary environmental standards to qualify for increased subsidies under the European Union's CEE (Clean Energy for Europe) program. This was confirmed in a government decree published on September 17 in the Official Journal. The ID.Cross, similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 3, has achieved the "minimum environmental score" required to access these enhanced subsidies. At the moment, only the large battery version using NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) technology with a 52 kWh capacity has validated the eco-score. This is the only version currently available for sale, while the smaller battery option using LFP (lithium iron phosphate) with a 37 kWh capacity is expected to be available in early October.
The ID.Cross is assembled in Spain, just like the ID.Polo, as the eco-score system is designed to encourage the production of electric vehicles within Europe. Production has only just begun, and the SUV is being built in a different plant from the city car. While the ID.Polo is assembled in Martorell, the ID.Cross is produced in Pampelune, alongside the Skoda Epiq, which shares the same technical platform. With the eco-score validated, the ID.Cross is now officially eligible for the enhanced CEE subsidies. These subsidies vary based on income levels and range from 3,535 euros to 6,145 euros.
In addition to the subsidies, Volkswagen has announced a generous 3,000 euro discount on the ID.Cross from the moment it launches. This discount, combined with the subsidies, results in an immediate reduction of between 6,535 and 9,145 euros. This significantly lowers the model’s initial price, which starts at 37,800 euros for the large battery version offering up to 426 km of range in mixed driving conditions according to the WLTP (World Light-duty Vehicle Test Procedure) cycle. With the minimum aid, the price drops to 31,265 euros.
The ID.Cross comes with a generous set of standard features, including 18-inch wheels, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, dual climate control, a rear camera, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. These features aim to provide a competitive and well-equipped electric SUV option for consumers looking to benefit from both subsidies and the vehicle’s enhanced features.
