The commercial, craft, and agricultural fair of Dompierre-sur-Besbre took place on October 3 and 4. This 49th edition marked the return of cattle, which had been absent last year due to a disease known as Contagious Bovine Dermatosis (CBD). For farmers affected by the drought, it was vital to reunite and support each other. "This year, in the equestrian category, two breeds are represented: a Percheron (Baptiste Charpin's breeding) and a Comtois (Frédéric Taillon's breeding). We have 58 cattle, mostly Charolais and a Limousin breeding, and 82 sheep competing," details Frédéric Taillon, vice-president of the fair committee. Among the judges, 13 young people from the MFR of Saligny-sur-Roudon evaluated the animals. "It is a beautiful experience for these young people. We create vocations because being a judge is a full-time job," says Sophie Cassado, technical instructor.
Despite the festive atmosphere, the economic conditions for farmers remain challenging. Anthony Navetat, who runs a GAEC (Groupement Agricole d'Exploitation en Commun) with his father, explains: "It is nice to see animals again. The morale is there, nevertheless, because people are happy to come back to a good fair. However, prices have fallen last week, which somewhat dampens the morale." The same sentiment is echoed by Enzo Lafaix, an agricultural worker and breeder of Suffolk and Charolais cattle: "With the lack of grass and hay, it is necessary to care more and it is more difficult to sell."
Stéphane Charrondière, a Charolais breeder in a GAEC with his brother, brings breeding stock to Dompierre-sur-Besbre every year. "With this drought, the stocks are decreasing, we have been using them since July. Usually, only one area is dry and we can find forage elsewhere, but this year, it is all of France. Coming to the fair is good to reunite with farmers and to make contacts." Frédéric Taillon confirms: "Regarding the drought, the farmers have made an effort to bring animals. They have somewhat gathered to discuss together, to change from farm life during these very difficult times. It is good to reunite. It is a convivial moment."
