A 32-year-old woman from California, Anila Baby, is accused of killing two mothers in two separate incidents in San Jose and Milpitas within less than two hours. The victims, Ann Mary Mathew and Anjana Hari, were described by prosecutors as close friends of Baby. Baby now faces two counts of first-degree murder, which could result in a life sentence if she is found guilty. She appeared in court for the first time in Santa Clara County and is being held without bail. The first incident took place on August 28 at Mathew’s home in San Jose. Witnesses saw an unexpected visitor at the residence, and Mathew’s husband later found her body inside. According to investigators, Mathew suffered strangulation and stab wounds. Surveillance footage from the home was deleted during the attack, though Baby’s sandals were found outside the house. About 90 minutes later, Hari, 33, was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of her apartment complex in Milpitas. The driver accelerated and hit her, according to court documents. Friends of Hari’s husband, Vijesh Vijayan, started an online fundraiser to help cover funeral costs, living expenses, and support for the family’s recovery. The organizers noted that Vijayan is struggling with shock, grief, and pain after his wife was killed in a hit-and-run. By Friday, the fundraiser had received over $94,000 from nearly 950 donors. Authorities arrested Baby after she allegedly tried to flee the Milpitas scene in her vehicle to a nearby parking lot. Officers said she was covered in blood and had facial injuries at the time of her arrest. Court documents show that charges related to the Milpitas killing were filed on September 1, while charges for the San Jose death were filed on Tuesday. Police connected the two homicides through forensic analysis and interviews. Deputy District Attorney Marisa McKeown described the attacks as deliberate, premeditated, and extremely violent. However, investigators have not yet revealed a motive for the crimes. McKeown expressed the greatest heartbreak of the case as the fact that the victims were best friends, and their families are struggling to understand why someone would harm their friend in such a way. Baby is scheduled to return to court on November 17 at 9 a.m. to enter a plea.
