Huawei has unveiled the Watch D3, the latest addition to its line of smartwatches designed to monitor various health metrics. Unlike traditional smartwatches, the Watch D3 features an inflatable cuff built into the strap, allowing it to measure blood pressure. This new model was introduced alongside two other devices, the Watch GT 7 and Watch GT 7 Pro, and aims to improve on the previous Watch D2 by being thinner and lighter. The Watch D3 is 11.3 mm thick and weighs 36 grams without a strap, making it more comfortable for daily wear. It also includes a larger AMOLED screen measuring 1.92 inches, with a peak brightness of 3000 nits—twice that of its predecessor. The Watch D3 offers several health and fitness features, including ECG (electrocardiogram) monitoring, fall detection, and support for over 80 different sports modes. Its battery life is rated for up to six days with normal use, though this drops to three days if the 24-hour blood pressure monitoring feature is activated. The blood pressure measurement uses an oscillometric method, similar to traditional arm monitors. This involves inflating a small air pocket in the strap to compress the wrist artery and measure pressure changes, providing more accurate readings than optical sensors used in many other smartwatches. Compared to other devices, the Watch D3 stands out for its medical-grade blood pressure monitoring. The previous model, the Watch D2, had already earned a medical device certification in Europe and China, a rare feat for a smartwatch. In contrast, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch uses optical sensors that require periodic recalibration with a traditional blood pressure monitor for accuracy. The Watch D3 improves on this by offering more accurate readings, particularly for individuals with large wrists, weak pulse, or hardened arteries. It also provides blood pressure readings before and after exercise, a feature not commonly found in other smartwatches. Huawei is nearly the only major manufacturer offering this level of blood pressure monitoring in a smartwatch. While Apple is developing an alert system for blood pressure issues, it has not yet provided direct readings. Xiaomi also offers a similar feature with its Xiaomi Watch H1, but that model has not been updated since its release in 2023. The new Huawei Watch D3 will be available in France starting September 29 in black, white, or gold, priced at 449.99 euros.
