Tesla has begun rolling out a new software update, version 2026.38, aimed at reducing complaints about glare from its vehicles' headlights. The update, released on September 30, introduces a feature called Dynamic Headlight Leveling, which adjusts the angle of low-beam headlights in real time based on driving conditions and traffic. This feature is currently available on certain Model 3 and Cybertruck vehicles in the United States and the United Arab Emirates. As of October 1, less than 1% of Tesla's fleet had installed the update, according to data from TeslaFi and Tessie, as reported by Tesla Oracle.
The Dynamic Headlight Leveling function uses internal motors to physically tilt the headlights, adjusting their orientation when the car accelerates, climbs a steep hill, or carries a heavy load in the rear. This adjustment is intended to prevent the headlights from dazzling drivers approaching from the front. Unlike matrix headlights, which are already present on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles since early 2024 and adjust high-beam headlights by turning off individual LED segments, Dynamic Headlight Leveling does not alter the shape of the low-beam light pattern but changes its direction.
The update comes in response to recurring complaints about glare from Tesla headlights, which led to a recall of 20,349 vehicles in the United States on August 4, 2026. The recall included 18,735 Model Y and 1,614 first-generation Model 3 vehicles produced between 2017 and 2023, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had determined the defect was not insignificant. Tesla stated at the time that a solution was still under development.
While the Dynamic Headlight Leveling feature may help mitigate glare, it does not change the distribution of light, meaning that if a headlight emits too much light upward, simply lowering it may not fully resolve the issue. Additionally, the feature requires adjustment motors, which are not present on all vehicles. Some French owners have been able to access the feature, but no detailed schedule has been communicated by Tesla regarding its availability in France.
