Xiaomi has unveiled its new "Dragonscale" battery, which the company says is completely safe. This battery will be used in two upcoming electric SUV models, the Skynomad N70 and N90, which are expected to offer a range of up to 505 kilometers based on the Chinese CLTC driving cycle. However, the Dragonscale battery will not be used in Xiaomi's electric sedan SU7 or the SUV YU7, which instead use battery cells from two other manufacturers, CATL and FinDreams from BYD. The Dragonscale battery is developed in partnership with two companies, CALB and Sunwoda. CALB provides the 76 kWh version using ternary lithium-ion cells, while Sunwoda handles the 52 kWh version using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Xiaomi is also involved in the cell development and manages the production process.
Xiaomi is offering a lifetime guarantee for the Dragonscale battery, which includes replacing an entire vehicle if it catches fire due to a quality defect and cannot be repaired. This guarantee applies only to the first owner of the vehicle and does not cover taxis, private hire cars, rental cars, or used models. Additionally, Xiaomi's embedded connected services must remain active, and maintenance must be performed through the official service network. In the case of a fire caused by a collision or impact, Xiaomi will cover the difference between the vehicle's value as stated in the insurance contract and the compensation paid by the insurer.
The lifetime guarantee is part of Xiaomi's efforts to build customer confidence after past incidents involving its electric vehicles, including two fatal accidents that attracted significant attention in China. In response, Xiaomi has formed a specialized committee to address safety concerns. The guarantee is also influenced by new regulations in China, specifically the GB 38031-2025 standard, which will take effect on July 1, 2026. This standard requires electric vehicle batteries to undergo rigorous testing, including thermal runaway tests and impact resistance. Xiaomi claims that the Dragonscale battery exceeds these requirements, withstanding a 500 J impact using a 25 mm pin—well above the 150 J and 30 mm required by the standard.
Xiaomi is preparing to launch its electric vehicles in Europe, starting with Germany as its first market. The company is also developing its battery technology to support this international expansion. As it moves into new markets, Xiaomi's focus on battery safety and reliability is likely to play a key role in its strategy to compete with established automakers in the global electric vehicle industry.
