A mother of a family was found dead in Céret, near Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales, during the night of Sunday, September 20, to Monday, September 21. She had been stabbed multiple times. Her 15-year-old son, who had disappeared from their home, was later found seriously injured at the foot of a nearby bridge. The teenager admitted to stabbing his mother, according to the Perpignan prosecutor's office, which opened a judicial investigation for the murder of an ascendant (a term used in French law to describe the killing of a family member such as a parent or grandparent). The body was discovered by the woman’s partner and eldest daughter, who had returned from a trip and found the mother dead at home. The victim’s partner, a volunteer firefighter, attempted to help her but was unable to save her life. The forensic doctor noted that she had suffered multiple knife wounds, which led to her death. The teenager had jumped from a height of about 20 meters and was seriously injured, requiring medical attention from firefighters. It was at this point that he reportedly admitted to being the perpetrator of the attack. According to the prosecutor’s office, the family had no known tensions or conflicts, and the teenager had no previously identified behavioral issues. However, initial psychiatric evaluations of the teenager suggested that the act might be linked to a neurodevelopmental disorder, possibly an untreated form of autism. The report concluded that the teenager may lack full legal responsibility and requires compulsory psychiatric care. The young man remains hospitalized, and the public prosecutor, Jérôme Bourrier, has initiated an investigation into the case. The next steps will involve the investigating magistrate continuing the inquiry and conducting further expert evaluations based on the initial findings.
