New smart speaker with camera released

Amazon has introduced the Echo Studio with Home Camera, a smart speaker that includes a built-in camera. Priced at 260 euros, the device allows Alexa to monitor a room and answer questions based on what it sees. It adds visual features to Amazon's high-end smart speaker, enabling home monitoring, visual assistance, and video calls.

Privacy and activation details unclear

The Echo Studio with Home Camera includes a button to turn off the microphones and camera, but this disables the device's smart features. Amazon says a LED light turns on when visual data is sent to the cloud, but it hasn't explained if the camera continuously analyzes the room or only activates in response to a trigger.

Smart sound and room adaptation

The Echo Studio has a feature that adjusts sound based on the room and user's position. It detects how far the user is from the speaker and changes the volume accordingly. This allows users to listen to music at their preferred volume, no matter where they are in the room.

Advanced chip and voice improvements

The device uses Amazon's AZ3 chip to help Alexa understand conversations faster and reduce background noise. This integrated processing makes interactions with Alexa sound more natural. Omnisense technology also adjusts room temperature and lighting based on ambient conditions.

Smart home integration and future features

The Echo Studio can now work with Amazon Fire TV, allowing video calls to be displayed on the television. It can recognize objects in its field of vision, like board games, and assist with ordering products. These features may encourage users to make more purchases on Amazon.

Privacy concerns and past issues

Many users and privacy advocates are worried about devices that constantly record and listen. Apple and Meta have also faced similar concerns with their products. Amazon previously had issues with Ring cameras, leading to a 5 million euro settlement. These concerns may affect how quickly customers adopt the Echo Studio with Home Camera.

Device now available for purchase

The Echo Studio with Home Camera is now available for purchase at 260 euros. It combines a smart speaker with a camera, offering new features but also raising questions about privacy and surveillance.
