Magic: The Gathering has launched a new expansion titled Darkhold Destiny, marking the third collaboration between the popular trading card game and Marvel. Previous partnerships included sets featuring Spider-Man and other Marvel Super-Heroes, released last year. This new expansion shifts focus toward a more magical storyline, incorporating characters like Doctor Strange and the Asgardians. It includes a new narrative that gives artists more creative freedom to depict Marvel characters in a style that blends with Magic: The Gathering's aesthetic while still keeping recognizable elements from their comic book appearances.
The storyline centers on Dormammu and Hela using the Darkhold, a powerful artifact, to invade the multiverse. Doctor Strange, Thor, and other Marvel heroes try to stop them. The expansion emphasizes spellcasting, categorizing spells into three "schools" of magic: arcane, divine, and black magic. Arcane magic is used by Doctor Strange and his allies, divine magic by Asgardians and similar beings, and black magic mainly by villains, though some heroes like Ghost Rider may also use it. The expansion reintroduces the "arcane" sub-type for instants and spells, last used in 2005, but does not bring back the obscure ability "Splice Onto Arcane."
A range of products will be available, including boosters, collection boosters, packs, and four commander decks: Strange Academy (White/Blue/Black), Gods of Asgard (White/Red/Green), Midnight Sons (White/Black), and Lords of Hel (Black/Red). Each commander deck will be offered in a collector's edition with foil cards. Two themed cases, each containing six cards with unique mechanics, will also be available. Both the standard set and a special gift set will include promotional cards with unique mechanics. Prices on platforms like TCGPlayer are expected to rise after the release.
Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Magic: The Gathering, will provide a first look at the original Marvel story in February through a comic created in collaboration with Image Comics. Another comic is planned for April 2027 as the expansion approaches its release.
