Marseille's public transport will replace plastic cards with digital passes by 2027, using smartphones for validation.
Digitization of transport cards planned
The RTM, which manages public transport in Marseille and its surrounding area, plans to replace physical subscription cards with digital versions starting in the 2027 school year. This change will allow users to validate their trips using their smartphones instead of carrying plastic cards.Smartphone validation to replace plastic cards
Passengers will be able to validate their journeys directly through their smartphones, eliminating the need for physical cards. The digital pass will be accessible on mobile devices, making it easier to use during boarding and during inspections by transport authorities.Environmental and practical benefits highlighted
Samia Ghali, president of the RTM, noted that the shift to digital cards will reduce the production of small plastic cards, which are often lost—particularly by younger users. However, those who prefer physical cards will still have the option to use them if they choose.Progressive modernization of transport systems
The RTM has been gradually modernizing its transport ticketing system. Since 2023, travelers have been able to buy single tickets using their bank cards, either physically or through their phones, at validation terminals located on buses, trams, and at metro entrances.
