BYD, a Chinese automotive company, has introduced a new line of electric commercial vehicles at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany. The range spans vehicles from 3.5 to 44 tonnes, aiming to expand BYD's footprint in Europe beyond its current focus on passenger cars. The company is targeting markets for last-mile delivery vans, waste collection trucks, regional work vehicles, and long-haul freight transport. One of the lighter models is the E-Vali electric van, which was first shown in 2024. It comes in two versions—3.5 and 4.25 tonnes—with a claimed range of 137 to 155 miles. The E-Vali uses BYD’s Blade battery and includes driver assistance features, but details on pricing, payload capacity, order dates, and availability in the UK are still unclear. The highlight of BYD's new range is the ETT 44, a 44-tonne electric tractor unit designed for long-distance haulage. It features a large 651kWh Blade battery and can produce 733 horsepower under normal conditions, with a peak of 986 horsepower. BYD claims the ETT 44 can travel up to 372 miles on a single charge. The vehicle can be charged using BYD’s 1.5MW Flash Charger, which can charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent in 20 minutes—adding up to 248 miles of range. A standard 420kW charger can achieve the same charge in about an hour. The ETT 44 is a 4x2 truck with a high-roof, flat-floor sleeper cab and has a top speed of 56 mph. It includes modern features like a 325mm central screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, as well as advanced driver assistance systems. The battery comes with a 10-year or 746,000-mile warranty, which is longer than the typical coverage offered in the European truck market. Alongside the ETT 44, BYD is also showcasing a variety of 4x2 and 6x2 rigid trucks, including models suitable for local distribution and municipal services. These include 26-tonne swap-body and hooklift versions, as well as specialized vehicles and yard tractors. The company is positioning itself as a provider of comprehensive solutions for fleet operators, offering charging infrastructure, energy storage, electricity management, maintenance, and financing options. However, specific pricing details, delivery schedules, and UK-specific plans for the new range of vans and trucks have not yet been announced. BYD's expansion into the European commercial vehicle market reflects a growing trend toward electrification in the transportation sector. As governments and companies aim to reduce carbon emissions, the demand for electric trucks is rising. BYD’s entry into this space with a range of electric commercial vehicles could challenge established players and accelerate the shift toward sustainable transport solutions. The company’s focus on advanced battery technology, fast-charging capabilities, and long-term warranties positions it as a strong contender in the evolving electric truck market.
