Rainbow Six Tactics, a new spin-off in the popular Rainbow Six franchise, will take a different approach by focusing on turn-based gameplay rather than the first-person shooter style that has defined the series so far. The game's director, Martial Potron, explained in an interview that this shift felt like a "natural fit" for the development team, comparing the approach to games like XCOM, which are known for their strategic, turn-based gameplay. Potron emphasized that the core of Rainbow Six has always been tactical gameplay, even though the series has traditionally been played from a first-person perspective. He explained that elements like finding the best line of sight, using cover effectively, choosing the right targets, and managing operators are all deeply tactical. These aspects, he said, are just as relevant in a turn-based format as they are in real-time action. The decision to explore a turn-based format also came from the team's experience with similar games. Potron noted that the Ubisoft Paris studio has worked on both tactical shooters and tactical turn-based games, such as Mario + Rabbids. This background made the transition to a turn-based Rainbow Six game feel more achievable and appealing to the team. Convincing Ubisoft and the broader Rainbow Six team of the project's potential was the next step, which they ultimately supported. Rainbow Six Tactics is set to release in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The game promises to bring the tactical depth of the Rainbow Six series into a new format, offering fans a fresh way to engage with the franchise's strategic gameplay.
