High school students in Montpellier seek authorized protest routes, with trade unions like Snudi-FO 34 and FO ESR 34 stepping in to ensure safety and compliance.
Student demonstration in Montpellier
High school students in Montpellier planned a demonstration on Saturday, October 31, but without an official trade union organization to support them, the event faced challenges in being authorized.Trade unions step in
The unions Snudi-FO 34 and FO ESR 34 took responsibility for organizing the demonstration after weeks of student mobilization. Mathieu Marchal, a teacher and representative of Force ouvrière, confirmed during a press conference on October 30 that the unions would support the students.Route modification requested
The original route for the demonstration was partially denied by the prefecture, which proposed an alternative path starting from the Triolet campus and ending at Montcalm Park. Sabine Raynaud, a teacher and FO representative, stated that the union had agreed to this new route.Security concerns remain
On Friday morning, the final agreement was still pending. The prefecture requested the unions to organize a security service for the demonstration, a requirement that added pressure on FO ESR 34.Union stance on responsibility
Alban Dessouter of FO ESR 34 said the union was willing to help with security but refused to take on responsibility for any incidents during the demonstration. He emphasized that no collective responsibility regime exists for organizations declaring a demonstration.
