JBL, a well-known brand in audio equipment, has introduced a new series of speaker bars called the Cinema SB MK2. These speaker bars are designed to work with JBL's portable Bluetooth speakers, allowing users to create a surround sound experience using existing devices. The line includes four models: the SB595MK2, SB580MK2, SB550MK2, and the smaller SB510MK2, each targeting different levels of performance and price points. The key innovation is a feature called SurroundPlay, a proprietary technology that connects the speaker bar with a pair of JBL Bluetooth speakers. This allows the surround audio channels to be sent to the portable speakers, enhancing the listening experience. However, the system requires two Bluetooth speakers and does not support using a single speaker for surround sound.
The SurroundPlay technology depends on newer speaker bars and JBL Bluetooth speakers that support LE Audio, a newer Bluetooth standard that allows for more efficient and higher-quality audio transmission. It also works alongside the surround capabilities of the JBL Cove series of speakers. At launch, only the JBL Flip 7 will be compatible with the Cinema SB MK2 line, though JBL may release updates to support other Bluetooth LE Audio or Auracast-compatible speakers in the future.
The SB595MK2 is the most advanced model in the series, featuring a speaker bar with a dedicated center channel, vertical speakers (Atmos), and a subwoofer with a 6.5-inch woofer. It includes an HDMI input and an HDMI eARC port, offering a powerful 440 W output. The model is priced at 449.99 euros. The SB580MK2 is a slightly simplified version, removing the Atmos speakers but retaining the other features, and is priced at 349.99 euros. The SB550MK2 is a more basic 3.1 system with a smaller subwoofer and no HDMI input or Dolby Atmos support, priced at 249.99 euros. The SB510MK2 is the simplest option, a 3.1/3.0 unit without a subwoofer or folding capability, priced at 199.99 euros.
All three higher-end models—SB595MK2, SB580MK2, and SB550MK2—can be folded into a U-shape, which is primarily for easier storage and transport. The JBL Cinema SB MK2 line will be available for purchase starting October 1, 2026, offering consumers a range of options to enhance their home audio setups with varying levels of performance and convenience.
