World White Cane Day event planned

On World White Cane Day, the Irsam and its beneficiaries are organizing an awareness campaign at the Saint-Leu seaside front. The event, starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, aims to highlight the difficulties faced by visually impaired individuals who rely on white canes for mobility.

Campaign includes educational activities

The initiative includes discussions with key stakeholders, role-playing scenarios, and various activities designed to educate the public about the challenges encountered by blind individuals. These activities are intended to foster understanding and empathy among attendees.

Inspired by a beneficiary's suggestion

Laetitia Dixmerias, a mobility instructor at the Samsah DV, managed by the Irsam, explains that the event was inspired by Eric, a beneficiary of the service. According to Dixmerias, Eric suggested holding an event at the Saint-Leu seaside front, which led to the involvement of other beneficiaries.

Author participates to raise awareness

Among those participating is Jean-Philippe Sévagamy, the author of the In the Dark column on Parallèle Sud. Sévagamy emphasizes the importance of the campaign in informing the public about the role of white canes and the experiences of visually impaired individuals. He notes that the public is often not sufficiently informed about the subject and that some people encounter fear when interacting with visually impaired individuals during their movements.
