The Chinese automaker Geely, which is not as well known in Europe but has a strong presence in China, has introduced a new version of its EX5 electric SUV for the 2026 model year. The vehicle was recently launched in China through Geely’s official website. While the design of the new EX5 remains largely similar to its predecessor—with clean lines and a cohesive look—the most noticeable changes include the addition of a LiDAR sensor on the roof, which helps with semi-autonomous driving features, as well as updated cameras and traditional door handles instead of flush ones. The vehicle’s dimensions are nearly identical to the previous model, with a length of about 4.62 to 4.63 meters, a width of 1.90 to 1.92 meters, and a height of 1.67 meters. It also features a front trunk (known as a "frunk") with 160 liters of storage space, in addition to a large rear trunk that expands to 1,838 liters when the rear seats are folded down. Inside the vehicle, drivers are greeted with a 15.4-inch touchscreen that runs the Flyme Auto 2 system, paired with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a heads-up display for enhanced convenience. Technically, the new EX5 has a rear-mounted motor, except for the entry-level model, which remains front-wheel drive. The new "Thunder" motor, which is an advanced 16-in-1 unit, boasts an efficiency of 93.8%. Power output ranges from 215 horsepower in the base model to 333 horsepower in the rear-wheel drive versions, which can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. The four 800-volt versions of the EX5 are equipped with a new battery system called Aegis Golden Brick, which uses "Ultra Short Blade" cells based on LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) technology. These batteries have capacities of either 61.52 or 70.01 kWh, depending on the model, and offer a maximum range of 635 kilometers under the CLTC (China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standard, or about 514 kilometers under the WLTP (World Light-duty Vehicle Test Procedure) cycle. The 800-volt system allows for fast charging at up to 460 kW, with Geely claiming it can charge from 10 to 70% in just 8 minutes and 25 seconds at normal temperatures. Geely is directly competing with another major Chinese automaker, BYD, with this new EX5. BYD’s Yuan Plus, sold in Europe as the Atto 3, features Flash Charging technology, which BYD claims can charge from 10 to 97% in nine minutes. However, the new EX5 has a lower alternating current charging rate of 6.6 kW, which is relatively slow for home charging. The entry-level model, which uses a 400-volt system and front-wheel drive, has a slower charge rate of 1.8C (over 100 kW) with a 60.22 kWh battery. The heat pump is standard across all models, but features like the LiDAR and semi-autonomous driving are only available on the top-tier trim. The 400-volt entry-level version starts at 97,800 yuan (around 12,800 euros), while the 800-volt versions begin at 107,800 yuan (around 14,100 euros), with the LiDAR-equipped version reaching up to 137,800 yuan (around 18,000 euros). This new version has not yet been announced for the European market, and if it arrives there, its price is expected to be higher due to potential tariffs.
