Shane Lowry, the 2019 Open champion, has revealed that qualifying for Europe's Ryder Cup team at Adare Manor in 2027 is a key goal for him. The 39-year-old Irish golfer is currently competing in the Irish Open, where the qualification process for the 2027 Ryder Cup has already started. The event is set to take place from 17 to 19 September 2027 in County Limerick. Lowry has previously played for Europe in the 2021, 2023, and 2025 Ryder Cups, including hitting the winning putt in the 2025 match at Bethpage Black. However, his world ranking has slipped from 26th to 53rd in 2026, marked by several near-misses in tournaments. Lowry said that playing well in front of an Irish crowd at Doonbeg this week is a major incentive for him. The Irish Open, held at Doonbeg, is one of several tournaments that could help him secure a spot in the 2027 Ryder Cup on home soil. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming Ryder Cup points and expressed his determination to get back into top form and earn a place on the team. European captain Luke Donald has organized a meeting of 16 potential team members at Doonbeg, the first Irish course to host the Ryder Cup since the K Club in 2006. This gathering includes players from the successful 2025 team, as well as potential newcomers like Alex Fitzpatrick, Eugenio Chacarra, Kristoffer Reitan, and Angel Ayora. Donald noted that some of the players have not previously played at Doonbeg and stressed the importance of familiarizing themselves with the course. Donald also mentioned that the possible decline of LIV Golf could make the selection process easier. With LIV Golf filing for bankruptcy, players are now free to leave the organization, which could lead to more events offering Ryder Cup points. Donald expressed a preference for having the six strongest players qualify automatically and noted that players like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, who previously played for LIV Golf, could have more opportunities to qualify if they compete in more events.
